Ancient Greek Mythology; LGBTQ+ Romance; Historical fiction

Book Summary

The Song of Achilles retells the tale of Achilles and Patroclus from Homer's The Iliad. Achilles, son of the tormenting sea-goddess Thetis and the heroic king Peleus, is strong, beautiful and admirable to all. On the other hand, Patroclus is

an awkward, young prince who has been banished from his homeland.

This novel presents a love that transcends death, and conquers immortal disapproval and wrath. Prophecies, predictions and oaths make the passionate romance between Achilles and Patroclus a captivating experience, constantly leaving you at the edge of your seat.

When Helen of Sparta is kidnapped, all the heroes of Greece are called upon to use their combat training to rescue her. Achilles joins the force of warriors, to fulfill his destiny as a hero; and Patroclus reluctantly follows due to his drastic love for his friend. As the war greatens, both Achilles and Patroclus must make a terrible sacrifice; and make heart-wrenching decisions between love, fate and glory.

“Name one hero who was happy.”

Is this book perfect for me?

This book is perfect for readers that love classic Greek mythology. The society and attitudes portrayed in this novel, reflect almost identically the ones of traditional Greek myths - such as the importance of glory and honour, and the ingrained sexism and homophobia held in society at that time.

This book is also perfect for readers that enjoy LGBTQ+ romances which is the key part of the romance this book tells. A homosexual relationship between adult Greek men was unusual at that time and a major part of the story is how Achilles and Patroclus maintain the true love blazing inside of them; ignoring the God's wraths and society's judgements.

“I could recognise him from touch alone, by smell; I would know him blind, by the way his breaths came and his feet struck the earth. I would know him in death, at the end of the world.”
